If anyone's interested in having a look at the cover art for French and German editions of Blaylock's books, I've posted a few covers at:

For the most part those are really great.  Especially for the Balumnia books the covers seem more mature.  I've never much cared for the art on my Ace paperback editions of ES and DD.

Great stuff Dmitriy.

I'm really curious, however, about the bizarre green creatures on the cover of the French edition of The Elfin Ship.  What the hell are those supposed to be??  Did somone remove the chapters from my copy which talks about the aliens that originally built the ship? It must be one of those cases where the artist hasn't done his homework.

Another cover that seems odd to me is the 1990 UK cover for The Stone Giant.  I came across it on E-bay, and the link to the picture is here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3597514794&category=2229#e...

The link won't work after 03/31, but I'll try and fix that later.

As you can see, the cover depicts what appears to be a scene straight from hell, complete with fire, human bones, and some sort of demonic humanoid.  Again, I'm missing this chapter in my copy...

Does anyone have any insight into these discrepancies?

The weird green creatures on the cover of the French paperback edition of The Elfin Ship are supposed to be trolls, I think... That said, J'ai Lu has been notorious for putting out covers with no relationship whatsoever for the contents of the books they were supposed to illustrate, or to provide only token advice to illustrators when they order a cover. ("We need a kind of airship and, uh, some trolls.") Or it may just have been artistic license. Smiley

Thankfully, both covers for the other Oriel books reprints at J'ai Lu are better. And nothing beats the Richard Dadd painting used for the first French edition of The Elfin Ship at Rivages. By the way, if you've never heard of Dadd, look him up on Google or some other search engine. Here's a character straight out of a Blaylock (or a Powers) book!
