Want to buy the Lumbog Globe?

A story in the St. Louis Post Dispatch on April 25, 2004 -

The Solar System inside a Marble.

Moon Marble Co. of Bonner Springs (moonmarble.com) sells giant underpants, rubber chickens etc - but also nostalgic games.  They collected marbles for the games, which lead to learning how to make marbles, and now sell all sorts of marbles, including one by New Jersey artist Gateson Recko (I know, this sounds like it was written by Ashbless) that took first place in the 2002 New Mexico Flame Off held by marble connoisseurs.

"Peer into the softball-sized marble, and you see what looks like the solar system.  Set the marble on a light stand and stars flicker on it its interior.  The price tag: $500."

"You can turn it and look at it for hours, " Sproules said.  "It has all these planets in it.  I have no idea how he does that."

Sorry, I don't have a scanner, but they have a color photo showing about a dozen marbles, including one that appears to hold a school of tiny goldfish, and another that holds a comically grinning Moon Man (I'm not making this up!), as well as the usual and still wonderful swirls and whorls of your everyday marbles of yesteryear.

I hope that Mr. Blaylock reads this.  I recall he has visited this message board before.  Or maybe one of his students will get the word to him.  Knowing that I somehow put him in touch with these folks, whether he buys one or not, would make my year!

It's really quite fantastic that things like that exist, despite how far above my price range they might be.  I'll have to put the Lumbog Globe on my list of items to buy when I win the lottery or marry into a wealthy family.  Ok...so I'm more likely to win the lottery.

An item I've been dreaming of aquiring for years is an antique orrery, such as this one:

http://star.arm.ac.uk/history/instruments/Phillips-orrery.html

I've seen them sell for as little as $2k, although the one in the picture would undoubtedly sell for far more.  I hope to someday have my own little museum (more like a private study/library) filled with items like the Lumbog Globe, an orrery or two, a few brass microscopes, some original phrenology busts, etc.

Wow,
And I thought my little, purple, glass paper-weight was cool.

I'll have to re-evaluate whether it belongs in my "Box of Marvels"

*chuckle*

I have to give you credit, Mr. Recko,  for not asking the obvious question of "And just what the devil is a Lumbog Globe??"  Perhaps this will inspire you to read some Blaylock in the near future; summer is nearly upon us, afterall Smiley

Nice work, thanks for the link!
