The protagonist decides that The Hula Girl Museum is the definite article, and as a consequence he enters a magic realm of adventure and wonder.
If he had ignored the Hula Girl (like most of us), his world would be dull and normal.
The 'choose your own world'-scenario (wonderfull or dull) was also the central theme of 'Digging Leviathan' as I read it.

Great Story.
