"For Nervous Diseases"

Here's something that Dr. Narbondo would love to get his hands on, twisted little miscreant that he is. Portable torture in an attractive carrying case.

I love eBay...

Can we find out who bought it?

As luck would have it, I was witness to a demonstration of this machine's powers just this morning on BBC America while I was watching Cash in the Attic.  Someone had discovered the machine hidden away somewhere, and one of the hosts/appraisers managed to convince the other host/appraiser to hold onto the electrodes while he gave the crank a whirl.  The poor man started yelling as if he were being executed and looked as if he couldn't have let go if he had tried.

I laughed myself silly! :)

After composing myself, my first thoughts, oddly enough, were: Dr. Narbondo.

Curiously enough, a friend of mine demonstrated a similar device at a dinner party some years ago. The quackery was on par with this model, however it involved glowing glass tubes driven by electric current, which put one in mind of the heyday of the electro/radio/active pseudosciences. No doubt it was emitting x-rays and ultraviolet in addition to the unwholesome purple glow, but it certainly livened up dinner, if not the physiology of the diners.

Update:

the eBay link has been removed, so I posted the pic directly.  Let me know if it's too large.
