Title: Paper Grail
Post by J.D. on 29. Jul 2007 at 16:49

Recently I was overcome with a sudden craving for Blaylock, and hauled out The Paper Grail and reread it.  I had forgotten how good it is.

Remember the Gluers?  And Uncle Roy's haunted house, and the ghost of Ruskin, and Graham the Fisher King?  The trademark references to donuts and fish?  And the hilariously nasty salon given by Mrs Lamey:

Glenwood Touchey - "Don't touch me, Touchey."
Gwendolyn Bundy - "You'd screw a chicken."

And the attack on Humpty Dumpty with Reverend White drooling and crying, "Raise a little hell."

If you're headed for the beach or the cottage, take along a Blaylock!

I think this book would be a great beach read. Or a good book to take on a Mendocino weekend getaway! I'd love to search for Humpty Dumpties. Surely he can't have just made that up....

In the town of Little Rock, in the Antelope Valley (Southern California) is a store that specializes in kites and wind toys. When I am there, I think of Paper Grail. Down the street, is Charley Brown's, an ancient store with giant Elvis figures, buffalo jerky, rattlesnake meat, a Christmas room, and of course marbles. A big. weird store.

This should be made into a movie. I would cast William Petersen (from CSI) and Zooey Dashinel as the leads.
